msi wind It’s finally arrived! The MSI Wind U90 has finally made its way onto the store shelves. The Linux version of the ever popular MSI has been highly anticipated since the announcement of the system awhile back, but has been evading us until just recently. The Wind U90 will be running SUSE Linux exclusively, however there will be an XP version of it in the near future.

This new model MSI Wind will be available by the end of September or beginning of October and will go for a shiny 339 Euro’s. Unfortunately no word has been given yet on a stateside release date nor have we heard anymore on the upgrade to the 6 cell battery MSI has been promising.

Shuttle has decided to hop on the bandwagon on ultra small nettop pcs. Their latest creation, the X27 is much smaller than what they’ve previously released. This little device runs with very little power, requiring only 23 watts when idle and 36 watts while active. Most of the energy saving aspect come from the fact that it’s sporting the new Intel Atom chipset. This also means that the fan noise is next to nothing.

The case isn’t that big either at 10- x 7- x 2.75 inches. There hasn’t been an announced date or price yet, but we’re sure that we’ll be hearing more about it by the end of the month.

The netbooks have been taking the world by storm as of late. But what’s been catching many consumers eyes even more so is that these companies are then taking those ideas for the netbooks and making nettops. We’ve already seen the Eee Box, so it’s no surprise that competitor MSI has decided to release their MSI Wind desktop PC. This little device will only cost you $139.99 and is actually pretty jampacked.

You’re looking at getting a 1.6GHz Atom processor, GMA 950 integrated graphics, 8-channel audio, 6 USB ports, 4-in-1 media card reader, CF card slot, and a VGA output. It is however, missing a hard drive, RAM, and optical drive. This is just the bare bones model, not the full fledged desktop model that will be coming in the near future. But if this wet your whistle, head on over to NewEgg.com and pick one up.

MSI_Wind_1 Those holding out for a 6-cell MSI Wind will be sad to hear that the longer battery models will actually come with a $50 premium tacked on. This move comes as a surprise considering that when it was initially revealed, the release of a 6-cell version would not cost anything extra. However, now that online retailers are starting to sell these bad boys from between $559 to $599.

That’s pretty awkward when MSI has officially released the MSRP at $549.99. But what’s more awkward is the fact that those who pre-ordered the unit from Buy.com for $499.99 are now being issued a cancellation notice for their MSI Wind.

Not a good second impression MSI.

7-23-08-lg_wind Netbooks seem to be taking over the world, and LG wants to hop onboard. The irony of it? They want MSI, the creators of the Wind (quite possibly the Eee PC’s most formidable foe) to build their X110 Netbook.

It would be safe to say that MSI is a quality company all around and are definitely kicking butt in this category. So why would they consider building their competitions system?

Well for starters, LG is looking to fill this baby with an 8.9 inch screen, 120GB hard drive, 2GB ram, and comes stock with Windows XP. That means that the price is expected to be between $625 and $790, making this the most expensive Netbook available. Their goal is quality over affordability.

MSI would be smart to take their money.

wind_delay Those of you waiting to snag a brand new MSI Wind will find yourself waiting just a little bit longer. The Atom-based mini-laptop was expected to be launched by now, but it looks like the date has been pushed back until June 27th. While not that far away at this point, the device, has received a bit of a price reduction down to $479 but has also incurred a drop from a 6-cell battery to a 3-cell battery. As battery time was one of the main proponents of the appeal for this device, this may be a deal breaker for many.

The idea and appeal behind all of these mini-laptops is that they’re not only ultra-portable, but they’re cheap too. So why does it seem like they’re continuously making them larger and increasing the price?

With the smallest incarnation having a 7 inch screen, and the largest currently having a 10 inch screen, they’ve already made one to two steps away from the small factor and have increased the price along with it, nearly $200 in some situations. While the features being added are useful, like Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi, more storage, larger screen, and a larger battery, we’re entering into the price range for some really quality regular sized laptops now.

Can these systems compete when they enter that point, or should those additions be left up to the modders who need them? We want to know what you think!
