wind_delay Those of you waiting to snag a brand new MSI Wind will find yourself waiting just a little bit longer. The Atom-based mini-laptop was expected to be launched by now, but it looks like the date has been pushed back until June 27th. While not that far away at this point, the device, has received a bit of a price reduction down to $479 but has also incurred a drop from a 6-cell battery to a 3-cell battery. As battery time was one of the main proponents of the appeal for this device, this may be a deal breaker for many.

The pro mini-laptop world just seems to keep gowning, as companies like SanDisk build up even more efficient ways to fit these systems with low powered and fast hard drives. The newest incarnation of the uSSD memory has allowed for all of these things to come true, lowering the cost significantly in models to come.

Launching this summer in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB models, you’ll be experiencing 39 MB/s read speed and 17 MB/s read speed on your newest mini-laptop. Every advancement in the prices that companies make allow the goal of a one laptop per child project to actually hit the $100 per system range at some point in the future.

The idea and appeal behind all of these mini-laptops is that they’re not only ultra-portable, but they’re cheap too. So why does it seem like they’re continuously making them larger and increasing the price?

With the smallest incarnation having a 7 inch screen, and the largest currently having a 10 inch screen, they’ve already made one to two steps away from the small factor and have increased the price along with it, nearly $200 in some situations. While the features being added are useful, like Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi, more storage, larger screen, and a larger battery, we’re entering into the price range for some really quality regular sized laptops now.

Can these systems compete when they enter that point, or should those additions be left up to the modders who need them? We want to know what you think!

3k-razorbook It’s confusing to see newer and smaller companies try and enter into the mini-laptop market especially with companies like Dell and HP already staking their claim. But apparently that hasn’t stopped 3K Computers from releasing their brand new RazorBook 400.

The major selling point for this specific mini-laptop seems to be that it’s actually lighter than the Eee PC, but lays claim to being shock resistant. I doubt that means that it will actually survive many falls however. Here are the specs so far for you to judge:

  • 7" LCD TFT display
  • Boot up time of under 8 seconds
  • Shock-resistant
  • 4GB SSD
  • Flexible suite of pre-installed productivity software
  • Weighs less than 2 lbs

dell-mini-laptop My obsession with these mini-laptops continues.

Dell has just released screen shots of their newest laptop that might give the current reigning champions like the Asus Eee PC and the Cloudbook a run for their money.

This device was seen being carried around by none other than Michael Dell during a recent convention, and with the power Dell holds over the general audience, we may actually see them taking charge in this field due to the familiarity people have with them.

With all the newer models of mini-laptops coming forward with Atom based processors, it looks like Dell picked the perfect time to make the jump.

Bad Name, Cool FeaturesAlthough this UMPC has one of the most uncreative names, it definitely offers a lot. This 7 inch laptop boldly goes where no mini laptop has gone before by including an optical drive (DVD burner). It’s also sporting a 1024 x 600 touchscreen display, 60 GB hard drive, and 802.11 b/g wireless card.

Supposedly, the Kohijinsha SR8KPO6S’s battery will last up to three hours and the device is only 2.4 lbs (0.2 more than the Asus Eee PC). With all the features it boasts, I’m sure that this device will cost users a pretty penny.

Dell Joins The Other “Me Too!”’s In The Mini Laptop MarketApparently Dell isn’t willing to sit out on the mini laptop design anymore and will soon be releasing their own 8.9 inch screen laptop sometime this summer. While it’s no doubt that the idea was in their minds from the second Dell saw the success of Asus and Everex, they are definitely one of the last to make it to this party.

No solid details have been confirmed, however, the summer time launch happens to match up pretty well with the expected launch of Intels new Atom processor.
