There has been a lot of talk about merging a Blu Ray player into an HDTV, similar to what some have done with standard DVD players. Mitsubishi and Funai were the first to announce the intention, but in the end, it’s Sharp’s Aquos DX LCD TV which reigns supreme in the battle for Blu Ray. The TVs are scheduled to appear in several sizes ranging from 26″ all the way up to 52″. The tv comes equipped with an integrated HDTV tuner and the ability to play BluRay movies. Perhaps the only other item worth mentioning is only the 37″ and the 52″ models will be offer 1080p resolution. The Aquos is scheduled to ship in late November for a whopping $1,963, depending on the size, of course.

For those of you who’ve been placing your big ‘ole HDTV on just any surface, Sony has a solution for you. Their newest home cinema, the Sony RHT-G500 is considered to be an invisible TV stand. This piece of kit may look like a just another piece of furniture, but it actually has a 3.1 channel audio system equipped with S-Force PRO Front Surround technology, HDMI inputs (including pass through), PMP connector, bluetooth, and Wi-Fi.

The stand can support between 32 and 40 inch HDTV’s (as many in that range tend to weigh the same). As of yet, there is no pricing information available.

149iSP Surround sound is pretty awesome. Watching any war or action flick is about ten times better when the explosions are going off behind you in your living room.

But setting up those tiny speakers everywhere isn’t for everyone. Mitsubishi has the cure for those of us who want a surround experience, with less hassle. Their new 149 iSP series LCDs have a 16-speaker sound bar to recreate that movie theatre aural assault.

The 46” model will run you $3300, while the 52” version (out soon) is $3700. While it won’t be as great as actual surround, if you’re in the market for a new set, this may be a good choice.

hyperwall2-1 Big TV displays are stuff of geek dreams. Who can have the biggest, baddest, best TV/monitor is king.

Just stop trying now because NASA will end you.

The hyper-wall 2 is the (awesome) name given to NASA’s crazy visualization set-up. It’s 128 screens and has 1,024 processor cores. It also has 74 teraflops of power – which is as much as 600 last generation gaming consoles – and is 23’ by 10’.

But NASA doesn’t use it to play GTA IV (at least during work hours), they use it for things like storm and weather monitoring and looking at black holes. Borrrring.

Hey NASA, I am coming over with Cloverfield on DVD. Get ready.

Comcast-10-million-pixel-displayEnormous TV shames other, less enormous TVs

10 million pixels. 2,100 square feet. $22 million. Now that is a TV that even the most jaded, spoiled couch potato can get excited about. At the Comcast Center in Philly exists a TV so glorious that it is five times the resolution of HDTV. The thing handles 27,000 gigabytes of info and (obviously) needs its own control room. Forget about Wii Sports in a movie theatre, I want to play it on this.

LG ScreenThe fact that we can access the internet without any wires is a luxury that we all enjoy. So why couldn’t we be able to do the same thing with HDTV? It is something that many people have dreamed of accomplishing and yet not many people have been able to accomplish until now. Apparently the 2008 CES was the great time and place for dozens of companies to show off this new technology. Some companies are ready to start selling this year and others are still working out the kinks.

LG is one of the many that is offering the wireless technology for 1080p on their PG70 plasma 60” and 50” televisions and will come standard on their LG71 LCD. LG has done a great job on creating a crystal clear picture on a video that is compressed with JPEG 2000. LG will be shipping its models in August.
