g-1 The Asus Eee PC family has decided to offer quite the price drop over the past few days. Perhaps it was inspired by the competition that has entered the market with the new Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook? Either way, we’re looking at some pretty great deals here.

The Asus Eee PC 901 is now available for just $500 and offers a 8.9-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, 12GB SSD, and a 6-cell battery.

The Asus Eee PC 1000H is now available for $449 and offers a 10-inch display, 1GB RAM, a 6-cell battery, 80GB hard disk, and XP.

You can pick either of these up for the mentioned price from Amazon.com

g-2 We would hate to get your hopes up and dash them away, but there’s always something that’s worth chancing it. Rumor has it that this Friday, September 5th, will be the official launch date of the Dell Inspiron 910.

The Inspiron 910 is Dell’s first step into the netbook market and it’s definitely causing some waves. There unfortunately is no pricing information available, even for this rumor, so we’ll have to wait and see what they’re looking to get for this nice looking machine. The Inspiron 910 is expected to take a lot bigger share of the netbook market then other competitors to the Eee PC due to it’s branding, but only time will tell how true that statement is.

The idea and appeal behind all of these mini-laptops is that they’re not only ultra-portable, but they’re cheap too. So why does it seem like they’re continuously making them larger and increasing the price?

With the smallest incarnation having a 7 inch screen, and the largest currently having a 10 inch screen, they’ve already made one to two steps away from the small factor and have increased the price along with it, nearly $200 in some situations. While the features being added are useful, like Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi, more storage, larger screen, and a larger battery, we’re entering into the price range for some really quality regular sized laptops now.

Can these systems compete when they enter that point, or should those additions be left up to the modders who need them? We want to know what you think!

3k-razorbook It’s confusing to see newer and smaller companies try and enter into the mini-laptop market especially with companies like Dell and HP already staking their claim. But apparently that hasn’t stopped 3K Computers from releasing their brand new RazorBook 400.

The major selling point for this specific mini-laptop seems to be that it’s actually lighter than the Eee PC, but lays claim to being shock resistant. I doubt that means that it will actually survive many falls however. Here are the specs so far for you to judge:

  • 7" LCD TFT display
  • Boot up time of under 8 seconds
  • Shock-resistant
  • 4GB SSD
  • Flexible suite of pre-installed productivity software
  • Weighs less than 2 lbs

Bad Name, Cool FeaturesAlthough this UMPC has one of the most uncreative names, it definitely offers a lot. This 7 inch laptop boldly goes where no mini laptop has gone before by including an optical drive (DVD burner). It’s also sporting a 1024 x 600 touchscreen display, 60 GB hard drive, and 802.11 b/g wireless card.

Supposedly, the Kohijinsha SR8KPO6S’s battery will last up to three hours and the device is only 2.4 lbs (0.2 more than the Asus Eee PC). With all the features it boasts, I’m sure that this device will cost users a pretty penny.

Windows XP Is Not Quite Dead YetOriginally thought to be receiving the boot, Windows XP has been spared for at least the next 2 to 3 years thanks to the new fad of mini PC’s like the Asus Eee PC, Everex Cloudbook, and the Classmate PC. The second line of these popular machines are expected to come preloaded with Windows XP as the systems are more geared towards faster loading and lighter system loads.

Could this all just be a well planned excuse to keep those resistant of Vista from abandoning the OS all together? Or a ploy to convince users to hold out until yet another Windows OS is released?

MSI Wind LaptopWhen the Asus Eee PC went to production, it conquered the hearts of many people who loved owning an ultra mobile and affordable PC even if it was rather underpowered by desktop or high-end laptop standards. The success of the Eee PC caused other manufacturers to design their own entries for the UMPC market. The most recent player is MSI’s Wind laptop which is a bit more expensive and powerful than the Eee PC but offers great mobility and 7 hours of battery life. MSI was displaying their prototype UMPC at CeBIT last week; the Wind laptop will have a 10-inch screen and 1GB of memory with an Intel processor running at 1.0-1.6GHz. Other than that expect to pay anywhere between $450 and $1100 depending on the options. Still no word about the actual release date for this product which will support both Linux and Microsoft Windows.
