g8 The 2.2 Firmware has hit the developers hands (and the DevTeams hands, who have already cracked it!) and what we’re surprised to see is the choices they’ve made on things to fix and tweak. There is still no copy/paste, but I think the entire iPhone community has given up on that by now. What we have seen however is that they’ve decided to revamp the Safari toolbar. We had no idea that it needed tweaking in the first place!

Apparently the changes include a repositioning the address bar and the search bar. Both will be clearly displayed when you load up Safari so you don’t have to tap to get to the search box. The fresh button is now also inside the address bar itself. This doesn’t seem like anything that monumental or even that great, so we have to wonder, why put this on the top of the list?

g-3We’ve all seen the continuing “I’m a Mac and I’m a PC” commercials that have graced our TV over the past few years. Just recently, we’ve also had a chance to see Microsoft’s version of these ads, simple called “I’m a PC”. While these two big companies fight over terms that they still haven’t properly identified (see also: a Mac is a PC. Windows runs on a PC.), some new gossip has come to light.

The “I’m a PC” ad has supposedly been created on a Mac. Ironic? Sort of.  But the truth of the matter is that the entire ad campaign has been made using a Mac.

This isn’t uncommon for video production to be done on a Mac. It’s not like the studio doing the ad was based within Microsoft. That’s just how they decided to do it. Unfortunately, this is going to blow up in their faces.

I’m still stuck on the fact that nobody realizes a PC is just hardware……

g-11 While there was clearly a bit of a head start to be had by the fact that the iPod Touch 2.1 firmware had already been jailbroken, it only took ONE DAY for the DevTeam to officially jailbreak the iPhone 2.1 firmware. This firmware update will allow you to run third party/non-app store apps as well as 2.5G/EDGE unlock your iPhone. There still isn’t an unlock for the 3G band as of yet, but you’ll be happy to know that this process has become a lot easier.

PwnageTool and QuickPwn have both been updated to handle all 2.1 devices EXCEPT the new 2G iPod Touch, so hold off on that for a bit.

g-6 Last week was a week of new firmware and new cracks apparently.

The iPod Touch firmware 2.1 launched just last Tuesday and by Friday it was already QuickPwn’d. The process isn’t exactly the one click solution that we’ve all grown accustom to, but if you’re the type that just can’t wait for the DevTeam to make things a little bit more noob friendly, you can go ahead and give it a shot. the whole process isn’t that difficult to handle.

While this method does work, the DevTeam has made it clear that this isn’t one of their official releases, so keep that in mind!

On Friday, Apple released firmware update 2.1 for the iPhone officially. It had previously been released to the iPod Touch community earlier during the week. While the results have yet to come in clearly, the promises made for this patch were fairly significant. Steve Jobs himself promised a laundry list of fixes, including fewer dropped calls, improved battery life, less app related crashes, and a much faster back up time to iTunes.

The update process took a significant amount of time as they always do and overall the iPhone is performing a lot smoother. But that’s just what this writer has experienced. Many other users have found themselves having to completely restore their phone due to this update. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more in later this week.

g-3 It’s always confusing when one competitor makes something that works so wonderfully with their rivals. So when we heard news of the Sony ICF-CD3iP we just had to share it.

This $100-ish Dream Machine isn’t just another CD playing clock radio, it can actually work with your iPhone or iPod. Surprisingly enough it looks very sophisticated and very appealing to have on a desk.

The features of this yet to be released device do include a remote for the iPod/iPhone and even an alarm function that can work in conjunction with your devices alarm. Hopefully the audio is as good as the device looks.

For those of you who think it looks spiffy enough without the iPhone/iPod connectivity you can easily remove that little side attachment and get things going the way you truly want them to.

g-2 T-Mobile hasn’t been keeping much about their new App Store inspired program out of the lime light. While the news came as a bit of a surprise last month that they would go as far as including Android and Sidekick in this launch, the plans have apparently changed quite a bit.

T-Mobile has now confirmed that they’ll be leaving the Andorid and Sidekick for the second round of this plan. What’s worse is that the API won’t be open enough to allow developers to throw ads in there to reduce the costs or offer a free ad supported option.

The goal is to make this available and working on day one. After that they’ll start conquering the rest of the markets, or so they hope. Expect the T-Mobile app store to launch on their Java, RIM, and Windows Mobile phones by the end of this year.

Apple’s Nike+ has been a definite hit with the running crowd. Why wouldn’t it be? It allows you to actually monitor how far you’ve gone on your run and how fast you did it. But with all this GPS technology Apple’s been flinging around, it seems that they’re looking to patten up some more precise real-time tracking shoes. They may even be abandoning working exclusively with Nike. Here’s what the folks over at AppleInsider got word of:

Since, a runner’s stride and stride type can vary over the course of a run (a sprint typically uses more of a toe plant style whereas a power walker would use more of a heel plant style), a user’s running style profile can also vary over the course of the run (as well as well as over the course or months or years, or as the running shoes wear, or between different, but authorized, running shoes). Therefore, in order to more accurately gauge a user’s overall running style, a user’s average running style can be calculated. In some cases, the user’s average running style is accumulated from a number of previous runs using the same running shoe or can incorporate average running styles from different (but authorized) running shoes, if desired. In this way, a user has the ability to compare running styles and/or performance not only from one run to another, but from one running shoe to another, or merely deduce an overall running style regardless of the running shoe used.

Tried out the new iTunes 8 yet? Well if you’ve got a jailbroken iPhone or are attempting to jailbreak your iPhone, you may not want to give it a shot after all. As of right now the PwnageTool doesn’t exactly play nice with iTunes 8. While Apple can’t undo what the PwnageTool does through firmware updates, the new iTunes does make it currently impossible to restore your iPhone to an iPwned ipsw.

The DevTeam is working their hardest on making their next release handle this issue, but is it really needed? Considering you can’t yet unlock the 3G network, there’s not a whole lot of use for it besides customizing how your iPhone looks. Perhaps if that’s your thing you should avoid the latest iTunes.

g-3 It looks like the biggest issue behind the 3G problems for the iPhone have finally been unraveled!

Sources from inside Apple have revealed that the latest iPhone firmware update (2.0.2) has actually done a little bit of fixing on the iPhone and network side. The problem that many people have been facing was a significant lack of 3G connection. It looks like the reason behind that was actually the fault of the iPhone.

When a phone makes a request to a cell tower for power, it only needs to take a certain amount. Apparently the iPhone was getting a little bit too greedy. The phone was asking for way more power than it actually needed, resulting in those who gained a connection managing to keep it, but those who just made connection with that tower would not be able to get any signal.

The firmware upgrade did make some changes and fix some issues with the iPhone, but until every iPhone is running this firmware, we still may be out of luck.
