While there was clearly a bit of a head start to be had by the fact that the iPod Touch 2.1 firmware had already been jailbroken, it only took ONE DAY for the DevTeam to officially jailbreak the iPhone 2.1 firmware. This firmware update will allow you to run third party/non-app store apps as well as 2.5G/EDGE unlock your iPhone. There still isn’t an unlock for the 3G band as of yet, but you’ll be happy to know that this process has become a lot easier.
PwnageTool and QuickPwn have both been updated to handle all 2.1 devices EXCEPT the new 2G iPod Touch, so hold off on that for a bit.

The Dell Inspiron Mini 9 has made a splash since it’s launch just this past weekend and it looks like there’s already some confusion. Apparently there are at least two versions of this netbook floating around the world. One of them won’t be hitting the states until much later this year. That version being the one with built in 3G.
While the boards are exactly identical, it would seem that there isn’t the right hardware for it in the US version. So our overseas friends will be enjoying their 3G systems sold from Vodafone, we’ll just have to enjoy what free WiFi we can actually find. Either that or wait until the end of the year, your call.

It looks like the biggest issue behind the 3G problems for the iPhone have finally been unraveled!
Sources from inside Apple have revealed that the latest iPhone firmware update (2.0.2) has actually done a little bit of fixing on the iPhone and network side. The problem that many people have been facing was a significant lack of 3G connection. It looks like the reason behind that was actually the fault of the iPhone.
When a phone makes a request to a cell tower for power, it only needs to take a certain amount. Apparently the iPhone was getting a little bit too greedy. The phone was asking for way more power than it actually needed, resulting in those who gained a connection managing to keep it, but those who just made connection with that tower would not be able to get any signal.
The firmware upgrade did make some changes and fix some issues with the iPhone, but until every iPhone is running this firmware, we still may be out of luck.

What does T-Mobile and the iPhone have in common? No, the iPhone is still an AT&T exclusive in the U.S., but they’ll both FINALLY be 3G very soon. While the exact dates for when T-Mobile will be rolling out their 3G service aren’t set in stone, the the 20+ zoned markets that they’ve already established will be ready to receive that wondrous almost last gen technology that even the most basic of phones have had for years.
But hey, you probably we’re using T-Mobile for anything more than texting Tony Hawk anyway, right?

30 days. That’s the new time limit made mandatory by Apple for all new 3G iPhones to be activated with a 2 year AT&T plan. Not only is this plan $10 more expensive then the first generation iPhone plan, it’s actually a separate part of your contract that’s just as mandatory as the phone service. While many of those purchasing the new iPhone aren’t intending on unlocking it, especially with this information becoming more well known, it still feels very big brother of Apple and AT&T to monitor people in that way.
I’m sure they’ll be some way to get around the whole system, but for that we’ll have to wait until after the July 11th launch.

The BlackBerry Javelin has been kept pretty hush hush by RIM until recently, but mock ups of the phone have appeared. This 2.5G BlackBerry device has a very sleek look to it and is expected to come equipped with a 3.2 MP camera, WiFi connectivity, and built in GPS. The question remains, why drop down to 2.5G? Even Apple realized the error in their ways and created the second generation iPhone with built in 3G. As technology continues to evolve, 3G will become about as cool as EDGE is right now.
RIM must know what they’re doing. After all, their line of funs is second to none in the business world. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

In a bold statement, it appears that AT&T will finally be parting ways with EDGE for their smartphones and PDA’s within the next few months. The move to 3G and future development of 4G may sound great and all, but considering how limited AT&T has made their network in the past, many new PDA’s might find themselves with a short shelve life. Mentioning 3G and 4G may make you look advanced, AT&T, but you’re way behind the game, especially in comparison to Europe.
Being an AT&T iPhone customer, I hope that they simply terminate my contract as my device is not 3G, so that I can make real phone calls instead of constantly checking if people can actually hear what the other end of the conversation is saying.

Cellphones have become one of the most popular and most useful gadgets. They are an excellent and affordable way to stay in touch. Many parents are even looking into getting their child a cellphone of their own so that they can use it in case of an emergency.
DoCoMo has given us a look at their F801i 3G cellphone that has the look that a child would love. DoCoMo has built the new F80i to be tough and waterproof – which is something that parents are grateful for. Along with the phone, children will receive a wristwatch remote that will help children to find their phone when lost (within 10 meters). If the child moves beyond the 10 meter radius the phone will automatically lock. Read the rest of this entry…
