Motorola is about to release the latest mobile phone in its long running motoblur brand of mobile phones. Called the CLIQ XT, this mobile phone is a slender, trendy make. Measuring about 2.3 x 4.6 x .5 inches, it looks beautiful in its all black motif. The Motorola CLIQ XT has a streamlined look with a black exterior. The 3.1 inch LCD touchscreen display occupies most of the front face, but there is a track pad, a menu button and the home button providing some much needed navigation. The CLIQ XT is a different sort of phone, is varied from the earlier phone CLIQ, also marketed by Motorola. In it, the XT is taller, wider, thinner and lighter in comparison with its predecessor. It is slimmer than the former model and is a feather weight creation, making it easier to slide into one’s pocket. The CLIQ XT sans the slidable keyboard makes room for a slimmer, trendier design.

Motorola’s fifth experiment with the Android, the CLIQ XT runs on the Android 1.5 donut. Considering Android’s meteoric rise, it seems a little outdated in terms of the operating system used, but one can expect upward compatibility being enabled on the device. On the software front, a major revamp from the earlier model would be the media player. The new music player is a fully integrated piece of software. It not only plays music but can also stream live feeds from Shout Cast radio, identify different song genres with SoundHond, and search/view music video files from youtube. You can also tune into the TuneWiki Community, which gives a host of services, such as Music Maps which allows you to see what other people in your city/location are listening to. Music apart, you can purchase tracks from within the media player, allowing you to do many things at once, completely integrated and seamless.

The phone is not equipped with a slide out keyboard but replacing this hardware feature is a software keyboard; not one or two but three keyboard methods are available. Two built-in android keyboards and the third one courtesy Swype. The swype system allows one to drag letters forming words on the fly. The experience may be a little confusing but nevertheless is a new way of typing in words. The on-screen software keyboards though looks somewhat cluttered up and gives one a claustrophobic effect.

The phone runs on a somewhat archaic processor – the QualComm MSM7201A 528MHz processor. It is not a high speed gizmo. One can expect slight glitches as the UI takes time to switch between screen orientations; however, it runs multiple applications simultaneously. In spite of minor setbacks, the overall experience is pretty good with Motorola adding some goodies in the software kitty. Apart from the music/media player, the CLIQ XT comes equipped with a good browser. You can make use of the Android’s web browser. It loads web pages pretty quickly. With built-in flash support, streaming videos on the fly in this browser is quite easy. Video though is slightly slower, as it takes a few extra seconds to buffer, giving it a slight lag.

Equipped with a five mega pixel camera, the picture quality is a big bonus. The camera is excellent and provides good resolutions. The camera comes with LED flash, comes with the digital quality zoom-in feature and has autofocus. It captures video at 24 frames per second, HVGA resolution.

.

The 3G network is quite stable, and provides good connectivity – one of the major features of this mobile phone. Providing stable sound quality at quad-band GSM speeds is another major plus. There is no noise whatsoever and the sound quality is definitely top notch. A good speakerphone also is an added advantage and makes this device even more likeable.

The 3G phone is expected to be unveiled in the United States with T-Mobile providing carrier services. With an average talk time of around 6.5 hours, and a stand by of around 13 days, it is expected to be quite decent although there are phones giving better performance on a lithium ion cell. The phone are yet to be priced; the phone has standard features – Bluetooth, GSM and WiFi along with MotoBlur – the integrated social networking functionality specifically added in Motorola based phones. One can however expect the phone to cost anywhere between 100 to 200 dollars, given that the CLIQ mobile phone from the same manufacturer was billed at 199 dollars.
