1 As storage space has continued to grow, we’ve seen numerous different solutions for those looking for something a bit more portable for laptops or even to use between multiple computers. While network storage devices and adding more internal storage are always options, external hard drives are the way to go for most people.

External hard drives have been a dime a dozen over the past several years, leaving the consumer stuck with some generic or over priced device that isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. So when Hammer Storage sent us their MoreSpace 500 for us to review, we defaulted to being skeptical. Surprisingly enough, that left us even more satisfied with the product then we could have imagined.

2 The casing for the MoreSpace 500 is pretty sleek and sophisticated looking. It is a solid hard casing with black covering most of the surface area and a gray strip running around the center. The LED lights on the device were surprisingly crisp without blinding you like many other external hard drives are notorious for, so that was a definite plus.

Getting down to the nitty gritty, you’re looking at a 500GB hard drive. It’s formatted as FAT32 by default to allow for maximum plug and play compatibility. Considering that it does utilize USB 2.0 like everything should nowadays, you’re not going to be suffering too much if you leave it in that format. However, Hammer Storage does recommend that depending on which operating system you use, you should format it to what works best with it (HFS or NTFS).

3 We didn’t run into any hiccups transferring files back and forth, streaming files onto another laptop from the computer connected to the MoreSpace 500, or even burning DVD’s directly off of it. Just looking at performance alone, this thing is a beast.

You’d be surprised at the number of other uses that you can use the MoreSpace 500 for. Considering the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 both have USB inputs and can read external storage devices, you can load up whatever media you want onto your MoreSpace 500 and play it directly off of your favorite console. Plus you can even save console related information directly to the drive itself!

4 Depending on what you’re using for a DVR device, you can easily use this to increase the maximum size of your recorder so that you don’t miss a single show. Pretty neat for a slick looking external hard drive.

But the real kicker behind Hammer Storage and the MoreSpace line is the cost. Anything over 500GB’s will run you merely $0.25 per GB which is ridiculously cheap. Even at 500GB you’re still paying way less than what some of the competitors are charging. You’ll definitely get what you paid for and more with the MoreSpace 500.

The MoreSpace 500 was provided to TheGadgetBlog.net for review by Hammer Storage.
